Osaka City University (OCU) invites applications for three tenure-track positions (Associate Professor or Lecturer) supported by a Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) program. The appointee will be provided with an independent research environment that includes a startup research fund. The appointee who is recognized as competent after the midterm evaluation held in the third year, and the final evaluation in the fifth year, will be promoted to the status of a full-time tenured position. OCU is seeking personnel who are committed to the highest standards of scholarship and professional activities.

I. JOB DESCRIPTION

1. Available Position

Three tenure-track positions: academic rank, i.e. Associate Professor or Lecturer, will be determined upon impartial judgment by the university panels.

3. Qualifications

  • Applicants must have a doctoral degree obtained within the past 10 years at the time of application deadline.
  • Applicants must be younger than 40 years old at the time of application deadline.
  • The applicant is expected to have work experience as an assistant professor, a postdoctoral fellow, or an equivalent position in academia or industry for several years, and significant accomplishments in research. Japanese language proficiency is not required, but will be required for tenure appointment.

4. Employment and Benefits

Five year tenure-track appointments start on the date of the appointment. The salary will depend on the applicant’s experience, as stipulated in the regulations of OCU.* Health insurance, mutual pension, employment insurance, and occupational injury insurance will be available.

* As of August 2013, the annual salary is approximately JPY4,200,000 to JPY7,500,000, depending on education, teaching experience, etc.

5. Promotion to Tenure Position

The contract of tenure-track position is for five years. A midterm evaluation in the third year and a final evaluation in the fifth year will be held. Those who have made significant research contributions and who pass the screening will be promoted to a tenured position. OCU prepares a tenured position for each tenure-track position. Those who fail to pass the final year screening will finish the contract at the end of that five-year period.

6. Research Environment

These tenure-track positions are supported by a Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) program to empower young researchers. The appointee is provided with independent research space and startup research fund. Funds in 2013 and 2014 will be approximately 10 million yen in total. The amount might vary depending on budget approval. The appointee will be expected to teach undergraduate and graduate level courses in the areas of expertise. To enable the appointee to concentrate on their own research, fewer administration duties are imposed: 60% of total working hours are guaranteed to be research time.

  2. Summary of research contributions (up to 3 pages including figures)
  3. Future research plans (up to 2 pages including figures)
  4. Reprints of representative publications (up to 5 papers)

3. Submission Deadline

Application materials (via both e-mail and postal mail) must arrive by 4 p.m. on October 31, 2013, Japan Standard Time.

4. Selection Schedule

The 1st stage selection by review of application documents: early November, 2013. The 2nd stage selection (for qualifiers only) including interviews: mid-November, 2013. Expected job starting date: December 1, 2013.
